Whether they’re providing employment law guidance or casting their own ballot, lawyers will be coming across rules for Election Day leave in the coming week.
As noted by CNN and this tracker from Fisher Phillips, there is no federal law mandating employees be given time off to vote, but 28 states and the District of Columbia do have some form of this regulation. North Dakota also has a nonbinding law encouraging employers to provide time off.
These laws differ on many requirements — notifying employers of plans to vote or compensation for time spent voting, for example.
