I do think we’ve seen an uptick in claims coming from attorneys who historically may have made progress toward partner, but in the more competitive legal industry where you often have to generate millions of dollars in a large law firm, they’re not getting promoted. And that creates this feeling of inherent unfairness.

In recent months, Biglaw firms have been sued by current and former employees, with claims centering on discrimination and compensation. “If I were a betting man, I would say there’s some correlation, even if you couldn’t prove causation, between the drive to grow profits and increase in counseling out, and the increase in filing those claims,” Kent Zimmermann, law firm consultant for Zeughauser Group, told Am Law.
