We are working in a sustainable industry and we want our firm to last as well. One of the ways to do that is just to really make sure that your people have a workload that they can manage without getting burned out.

Brad DeJean, a partner at Clean Energy Counsel, in comments given to Bloomberg Law on the growing boutique firm’s philosophy for success: sustainability. “The idea is that hour-for-hour you’ll do as well here or probably better [than in Biglaw],” said partner Zach Crowley. Associates at the firm have a 1,200-hour billable goal each year, and while their starting salaries are lower than that of Biglaw associates, they’re able to make up the difference through bonuses. For every hour billed over CEC’s 1,200-hour goal, associates will receive a bonus, on top of origination credit for new business.
