Biglaw Firms Have The Urge To Merge In The ‘Great Growth Race’

Ed. note: Welcome to our daily feature, Quote of the Day.

The first half of the year portrays a picture of kind of a modest increase of merger activity relative to 2023, but the big picture here is there is this higher level of interest and merger discussion activity. And, as a result of that, we feel pretty confident we’re going to see an uptick in completed mergers for the rest of the year, and one that will be in excess of the 2023 numbers.

Kristin Stark, a principal at Fairfax Associates, in comments given to the American Lawyer on a new report concerning law firm mergers completed in 2024, and whether that number will continue to rise. Thus far, Fairfax has noted nine completed combinations in 2024’s Q2, and the total for the year is 29. According to the Fairfax report, it is “anticipate[d] that the current levels of activity will lead to an increase in completed mergers during the second half of the year and into 2025.”
